With the upcoming trips for the Flag a Munro challenge for SiMY’s DofE groups fast approaching, we took a couple of groups out this weekend for a visit to Ben Lomond. Most of the young people had seen the hill from a distance – for some of them, it’s just visible from the windows of their flat in Glasgow.
Rather than trudge up the ‘tourist track’ we opted to take the more scenic Ptarmigan Ridge route – a little steeper and rockier, but usually quieter and a lot more interesting. Both groups did well, making reasonable time up and making short work of the return down the main track. We also had a fairly even distribution of good weather, with Saturday’s group starting in the mist and drizzle before the sun broke through at lunchtime, and Sunday’s group catching some great weather early in day before the rain arrived as we made our way down the lower reaches of the mountain.
